Design our Backyard

My wife and I recently purchased a new home and are ready to landscape our backyard. We are holding this contest in order to gather ideas from landscape architects/designers to create the perfect space. Please see details below as well as attached images to assist in your designs.

- We like to entertain guests, so our backyard should be a good space for friends and family to gather.
- The style of the backyard should be modern/contemporary.
- We prefer hardscape (pavers or concrete) for the backyard instead of grass.
- Along the back view fence, we would like to add a bit of privacy.
- We would like a built-in bbq with attached seating area.
- We want either a water or fire feature (ideally on the opposite side of the yard from the sliding glass door so that it can be seen from inside).

****Submission MUST include a 3d rendering and design plans.

Please use your imagination to create a modern, fun backyard that we can enjoy for many years to come. Once we review submissions, we will give additional thoughts and ideas until we are satisfied with the result.

      Unfortunately, there are strict rule about digging in our area. That's why we can't have an in-ground pool, only above-ground.

    Just a note for all the designers. We want a bbq/dining area as well as a separate seating area. The seating area could be an outdoor couch and some chairs or an L-shaped couch with a table. Also, we are unable to build structures above the fence line, so please don't submit designs with patio covers. Thanks

    The house dimensions are given, but not the property dimensions, so a design cannot yet be completed. Much more info needed for a proper design. Privacy from what/where? What landscape zone are you in?

      Hi Brett. Thanks for your feedback. The dimensions that I gave are for the backyard itself. The long side of the drawing is the iron fence that you see in the images I attached. The side fences are vinyl. If it would help, I can modify the dimensions drawing to show more specific details such as where the windows and sliding glass door are, or you can reference off the images. The long iron fence along the back of the yard is slotted, so there is no privacy from the parking lot and building that are on the other side. The idea that we had was a row of ficus trees along the fence to provide privacy. We live in Southern California, so the landscaping should be water efficient. We don’t necessarily want a lot of plants though. The only items that will stay in the yard are the air conditioning units you see in the images. Those can’t move, so ideally we can hid them with some shrubs or something. Please let me know if you have any other questions.
