Hi, There is a very huge difference when it comes to patents v trademarks, therefore, I cannot give you a good opinion unless I have seen the work. You need to trademark your design (hand-drawing will do), provided or course it is unique and get a trademark lawyer to register the design. In the process, they will be able to research if there is any other conflicting design. You will need to decide if you want to do a worldwide search or a local one only and it will affect your costs. Get a US attorney.

In a nutshell patent is the process in which how you make things as in how you made the particular bag, the how of it is what you want to patent, the trademark on the other hand is the symbol or visible mark that becomes associated with a particular thing as in where the bag that you made is know for say an LV logo, they're two different things.
