Hi! I'm a professional web developer and i can do exactly what you need, i have read the .pdf and i have already done a similar chat like this before for a social site. All the tech that you suggested is ok, it could be better with websockets but you need a VPS server for that. That way you would get instant message transfer. But this way AJAX is ok too.
