Overall Weighting of Assessment 1 - 50% This is an individual piece of work of 3000 words, involving two parts – An individual essay and an individual reflection Part 1. Compare and contrast two organisations (1500 words) This part of the assignment requires you to compare and contrast two organisations, based on the case studies provided at the end of this document (see appendix 2). You are expected to use academic concepts, theories and the reading you have done for the module to do this. In particular you should compare and analyse the companies in terms of 1. Organizational Culture 2. Organisational leadership 3. Organizational structure 4. Motivation and job design 5. Power and politics From reading the case studies, you should notice straight away that the two organizations are very different in the way that they operate and in the way that the members of the organization experience their work. You need to explain these differences, but also note any similarities in your analysis. Your answer should be in essay format. There is no need for subheadings but there should be an introduction (one paragraph is enough). The body of the essay should be clearly structured in sections which compare and contrast the two organizations – with headings such as organizational culture, leadership, organizational structure, motivation, power and politics. There should also be a brief conclusion and a references list, listing all the sources referred to in the body of the essay. This must be in the required ‘Harvard’ style (Cite Them Right version) as given in the guide to referencing provided on the UEL library webpages on the intranet at: [login to view URL] Exceeding the word count by more than 10% will result in a penalty of 10% of your marks for your work. If your work is significantly shorter, then you will probably have failed to provide the level of detail required. The document should be formatted as: Font size 12 1.5 line spacing Margins at both sides of the page of at least 2.5 cm Pages should be numbered Your name should not appear anywhere on the paper to ensure anonymous marking. Part 2 - Personal Reflections on Employment (1500 words) You should write a reflection on what you have learned about the nature of employment in undertaking the People, Organisations and Management module. In this reflection, you should make reference to any organisational behaviour literature that is relevant. You may address the following key themes in your analysis 1. What types of organization would most engage and motivate you? Why would you be more productive in these organizations? Compare and contrast with other organisations where you would be less engaged and productive. You might in your reflections draw on the literature on leadership, classical, human relations and contemporary approaches to organisational behaviour, culture, motivation, or teamwork. 2. You might also reflect on how the literature on identity, personality and emotions relate to your experience of work 3. What are your strengths and weaknesses when it comes to employment? 4. How will you address your weaknesses? What targets will you set for your development?
