• Start summarizing each paper (20 Papers provided by me). Most of the information you are looking for will be in the following sections of the paper:
• Abstract, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Conclusions/Recommendations.
• For each summary of the paper you need to extract the following information:
• Industry in which the pipeline was used (Oil, gas, etc.)
• Environment (such as region of the world, hot, cold)
• Medium transported (What kind of fluid was transported)
• Operating Conditions (temperature, pressure, other necessary process details, etc.)
• Background to the failure (How many years in use before failure, What happened immediately before/during the time of failure, etc.)
• Methodology adopted to conduct failure analysis (Cutting, SEM, XRD, radiography, etc.)
• Mechanism/mode of failure (How it failed? i.e., corrosion, fatigue, welding failure, etc.)
• Cause of failure (Why it failed: operating conditions were not fulfilled (operator fault), wrong material, design fault, etc.)
• Conclusions/Recommendations (What can be done to prevent failures in the future)
• It would be better to remove the names of countries/regions from the summary. If the environmental conditions are relevant to the failure, those can be mentioned in generic terms. Likewise, avoid using names of companies.
• Remove the year. Replace it with the number of years in service for the component.
• Write early on in the summary as to how the failure manifests itself i.e., leakage, explosion, blockage, etc.
• Wherever available, the medium (gas, oil, etc) of transportation should be mentioned along with the operating conditions.
• Likewise, try to distinguish between mode/mechanism of failure and cause of failure.
Once the summaries are made for each failure, the real challenge will be to present them in a way that is beneficial to the reader.
The delivery process will be as follows:
1- Summarize 2 papers to present them to the instructor
2- If he approve it, you will summarize the rest of papers (18 papers)
3- Then summaries what you have done ( the summaries of the 20 papers )must be summarized into a 10 pages consist of ( Introduction, body and summary) in a simple word file only.
