I am an “Old Times” Programmer. I got my University Degree in Computer Science at Pisa University (Italy) in 1981. I started writing programs in the early ‘80s, and since then I have been working with a multitude of languages, computers, and application fields. At the beginning I worked for various companies, small and large, but since the early ‘90s I have been self-employed. It is since 2015 that I have been working on Freelancer, mainly because I very much appreciate the personal autonomy and the worldwide market access that this organization offers. In this period I have been working in C and C++ to develop programs on Windows and Linux Operating Systems, and on custom electronic boards based on Microcontrollers ( embedded firmware ). Besides my “historical” expertise with software, I have acquired a good competence in electronics, to the point of being able to understand, discuss and help in troubleshooting custom electronics boards. Such skill is of great utility when developing or maintaining embedded firmware. As you may see from my portfolio, I have been equally successful in different fields of software development, from sophisticated User Interface and Graphics Programming on Windows, to Communication and System Programming on Linux, from Network and Asynchronous Communication Protocols to Embedded Web Servers on Microcontrollers. But if you ask me which I consider to be my main skill, I would say that it is the ability to address new problems, on which I have little or no previous experience, and master them to the highest customer satisfaction. One thing I most appreciate from my customers is their “collaborative” attitude, while we work on a project. Virtually all the projects I work on require an extensive collaboration to communicate and clarify the requirements, and most of all, to test and validate the work being done.

Portfolio

This work started at the beginning of 2019 and was completed at the beginning of 2020.
It included 3 Freelancer Projects.

It started with:
--- a Central Controller, which was based on a Microchip 32 bit PIC and an ILI9341V 320 x 240 color TFT screen.
--- a number of "Remote Units" based on a PIC 16 bit controller, connected through an RS485 connection and Modbus protocol.

What I did:
--- Made the Central Controller firmware run faster and removed various bugs.
--- Developed a driver for the ILI9341V TFT device so it could be used through Microchip Graphics Libraries.
--- Developed a bootloader for the Central Controller so it could be updated through an USB memory dongle.
--- Developed a bootloader for the Remote Units so they could be updated through the RS485 connection.
--- developed a new firmware application for the Central Controller to manage the updating of both the Central Controller and the Remote Units.

TFT controller and remote units

This work includes ( as of mid 2021 ) 7 completed Freelancer projects.
It started in 2016 and is still going on.
It consisted in overhauling a set of programs whose development had stopped since at least the early 2000s.

Those programs were used to display on a Windows PC, data acquired from an Engine Control Unit through a CAN bus connection.
The interface to connect the PC to the CAN bus is a custom hardware board.

The programs were used to display real time data received from the interface, in various forms: numeric, 2D graphs, interactive 3D maps ( using Open GL ), gauge pages, scope views.
The displayed data could be configured through Lua scripts.

What I did:
--- Removed bugs from and added features to the Windows and firmware programs,
--- Updated the interface firmware to allow local recording of the data on an SD Card.
--- Rewrote missing parts of a program used to display the recorded data.

Overhauling legacy C++ programs

This work started and was completed between spring and summer of 2020.

The customer needed to transmit real time video and control signals between points few kilometers apart, with hills in between, using Raspberry Pi boards

They had started using OPENHD, an open source software, which uses "Wi Fi Broadcast" as communication layer, but there were no known hardware or software systems which could be used as repeaters, to triangulate around the obstacles.

There were also new features to be implemented, and it was requested the real time recording of the video.

What I did:
--- Used standard Wi Fi LAN TCP IP, for which there are plenty of off the shelf repeaters and extenders.
--- Fixed many bugs and implemented new features
--- Because the video to be recorded was a video stream from a camera with telemetry data superimposed, to record it I had to re-sample and encode the video buffer. To have an acceptable frame rate I had to use the Raspbian 3b+ internal GPU.

Remote real time video and control

This work started in the first half of 2018 and ended a year later.
It included 5 Freelancer projects.

It started with a Microchip 32 bit PIC controller based board, a draft HTML page and a basic firmware application which managed a number of electric motors and sensors.

What I did:
--- Helped with the troubleshooting of few iterations of the hardware prototype.
--- Connected the board to a Wi Fi LAN, using Microchip Harmony TCP/IP Stack, and WINC1500 chip,
--- Added dynamic web variables and control buttons to the initial HTML page, and let it be accessed through Microchip Harmony embedded HTTP Server.
--- Sent e-mail messages from the board with monitoring and alarm information
--- Connected to a remote server to send status and alarm information as HTTP messages

Firmware with WiFi and web interface

This work started in the first half of 2019 and was completed after few months.
It included 2 Freelancer projects.

The client had developed in Visual Basic a simple but effective algorithm to position 2D objects on large 2D sheets, minimizing the unused space.

The program in VB was very simple, but very slow ( tens of hours or even days ).

The client asked for rewriting his algorithm in C++ and possibly in Assembly, to make it faster.
He would be fully satisfied if I obtained a speed increase of at least 50X.

I did it, using complex C++ structures, in about 1200 lines of densely written C++ code and I reached a speed increase of more than 1500X.

After that the client did not ask to go for further optimizations using assembly, instead he asked for increased functionality, like the minimum distance between objects and from border, as well as allowing non square rotations of the objects ( rotations other than 90, 180, 270 degree )

Speed up an 2D placement algorithm

This work started in the second half of 2017 and was completed in the first half of 2018.
It included 2 Freelancer projects.

The client had developed an Internet server to acquire and manage report files from multiple remote locations.
He needed a Windows Service ( a program which runs in the background, without user interface ) to be installed on each remote computer to manage a local directory tree.

I developed a Windows Service which connected to the server using libcurl ( a library to access remote sites using curl commands ) with openssl to establish secure connections.

The Service used openssl library also to compute MD5 checksums of each file for integrity controls.
It remained in connection with the server to receive commands and to send information about the managed directory. It also uploaded files upon request from the server.

I also developed a setup program to install the Service, which connected to the server to check the security credentials for the Service.

USB Comms using UART on PIC32MX

CIro helped me get started and setup with the PICMX32 device which requires configuration and coding experience which he had. He was easy to work with, has very good English and is punctual and reliable. I will be happy to work with him again on further tasks as they arise.

Nordic BLE Secure DFU master for Zephyr RTOS

Ciro is a great person and engineer, he spent lots of time on the project, but invoiced us only for the time he really spend on requested features. He can work independently, is able to solve the problems himself and the result has expected functionality and quality. It was really pleasure to work with him and I hope that we can work him again on another projects.
