I'm a mining engineer. The majority of my work has involved field design work and data management to ensure that designs were implemented correctly. In many cases, this involved analyzing equipment data quickly so that we could use the results in our next design. Equipment data i.e. drill hole data, truck payloads and travel times, digger rates and efficiency can create ~100,000 data points per day which can be overwhelming. I specialized in taking this data and making it usable in Excel. Several of my former systems are still in place years after I have left. I am now product manager for a Blast Management software. We take large amounts of field equipment and tablet data, find patterns, and make them visually recognizable in seconds. I've always enjoyed working with Excel and have become "the guru" at most of my jobs. I figure I should at least try to get some extra beer money while I'm at it.
