We are pleased to welcome you to The Tavern and The Inn At Warm Springs.
The Tavern occupies the space of the first Bath County Courthouse , originally a one story building built by Anthony Mustoe in 1796. Rebuilt in brick in 1841, adding the home of the sheriff, site of court proceedings, and depending on the crime the site of public hangings. The main building served as the County Seat of Government for 66 years, even surviving occupation of the northern troops during the war between the states.
Our bar area housed the County Clerk's office, where a large historic metal safe still remains. The safe, currently our wine cellar, provided space for safekeeping of all valuable documents during the era.
Our Coffee House served as the judge's chamber, with a convenient view on to the backyard and the Jail House.
The first Jail House of Bath County, built in 1792, sits behind The Tavern. The original building was 20’ by 16’ and two stories with four rooms on a stone foundation. The building was originally constructed of hewn logs with Oak Planks on the floors and walls, and two windows, one on each floor. The upper floor served as the court house until the court house could be completed. In 1841 the Jail house was rebuilt with brick and the building served as a jail for 66 years. Rowdy court days, hangings and general misbehavior prompted the local citizens and visitors enjoying the serenity of the Jefferson pools and accommodation at the Warm Springs Hotel (formerly located behind the Jefferson Pools across the street), to request the move of the Courthouse and jail in. As of 1906 it is now located in the village of Warm Springs.
After the move, the former Courthouse building along with the jail and outbuildings, were purchased by Charles Rogers at public auction. Rogers renovated the Courthouse, removed the bars from the windows in the jail, refinished the floors and named it Maple Court Hotel.
The Hotel changed ownership in 1928 when purchased by Orvis E. Dunham who operated it as the Warm Springs Inn. The Inn was later purchased by Edmond and Juliette Routier in 1947 and later operated by Bob and Carol Routier who ran the Inn until 1990. At that time the Inn was sold to Peter and Ruth Worthy, in 1991 who in 2011 sold it to their family Peter and Trisha Worthy. The current owners Jarek and Travis, purchased it in the summer of 2017 and are continuously working to recreate the charming, country inn of years past and welcome you to enjoy your visit .
