Project Aim and area of discussion: The focus of research is on unique oleophilic properties of flax; it has been shown that flax adsorbs/absorbs oil much better that water. The applications include soil remediation for oil spillages on land, and alleviating environmental damage of sea oil spills. The project is linked to EU INTERREG project FLAX of School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences. The project will start by critically assessment of existing methods of cleanup. An additional focus will be on Life-Cycle analysis (LCA); oil-soaked flax can be used as fuel to generate useful energy. Good aptitude for experimental work and analysis of the results are required for the project.
