I am scanning a series of small size documents (10cm x 7cm). I scan four at a time, placing them side by side on the scanner, to save time. The purpose of this project is to create an application that will detect the contour of each of the four documents and save them into separate files. The documents are rectangular in shape, but sizes may vary slighty, and they may have to be rotated. See file input.jpg. The documents are scanned under a black background to make it easier to detect its contour. The software must be a java component (swing). It must receive as a parameter the path of the scanned image, allow the user to confirm the operation and save then into four separate files. I will supply some images to be used as test samples. The developer does not need to have access to a scanner. The program will run in Linux, but it can be developed in windows or other OS as long as it only uses the standard java APIs.

I think that besides those functions GUI, which you have specified ("It must receive as a parameter the path&"), still it will be necessary to set a maximum deviation of density of a background as in your image it variously on its area.

Very interesting project. I would love to do it and have already figured out a couple of accurate and efficient algorithms that could be used to do it.
