So I've looked a bit into Bang!Howdy and I'd find getting elbows deep in an abandoned project like that to be a very interesting challenge. I have experience configuring servers, even notoriously difficult ones (mostly e-mail inboxes and mass-mailers) and I'm very confident in this case because the server's source is completely open, I can read Java well enough and this project in particular seems to be very well documented. My experience is mostly with Linux platforms, though I have used Windows command prompts from time to time. I'd be interested to know what kinds of server issues you anticipate and if scaling up is something I should be considering.
