teacher create test of 4 module, listening, speaking, reading and writing. like [login to view URL] Introduction 1 The proposed Internet English Testing System (IETS) is a rigorous and exacting online test of the English language to international standards. System Outline 2 IETS will be a 100% online testing system. IETS will test the student’s English proficiency comprehensively in four areas: a. Listening b. Reading c. Writing d. Speaking 3 IETS is multi-media. Audio is used extensively, and the student’s PC must be equipped with a microphone to complete the Speaking tests. 4 A summary of IETS functions is as follows: a. Tickets to take tests would be sold in the form of a security coupon containing a unique identifier of a long random string of numerical digits in a sparsely populated domain. b. A student signs in to take the test using a valid identifier. The student may stop the test mid-way and continue on another occasion. Once the student completes all four modules of the test, the identifier would be expired. c. Marking for multiple-choice questions and questions with deterministic objective answers would be marked by the system immediately. Human markers can sign in at their own time to mark the writing and speaking tests. d. IETS would be designed to allow the institute/administrator to upload multiple versions of the English test. There are a number of questions formats available and a test may make use of a combination of various test formats in each of the four sections of the test. e. Scoring will be carried out as the questions are marked. There will be an option for the institute to moderate the scores. Final results are published online and a student will be notified by email. All results will also be published online with only the identifier made known so that students can see their standing against the testing population. Testing Modules and Formats 5 There are four modules in IETS and each module has a number of question formats. Examiners have to set the questions using these pre-defined formats, and the institute can create a test by selecting a combination of modules and formats. The modules and formats are: a. Listening Module: 3 formats: i) Format I: An audio clip is played, and after listening to it the student is required to answer a number of questions about the contents of the audio. The questions will be multiple-choice questions. ii) Format II: An audio clip is played, and after listening to it the student is required to answer a number of questions about the contents of the audio. The questions will in the form: “use not more than three words”. There will be three boxes with a drop down list of about three to five choices each (nothing is a choice for the second and third boxes). iii) Format III: An audio clip is played, and after listening to it the student is required to answer a number of questions about the contents of the audio. The questions will require the student to answer in a complete type-written sentence b. Reading Module: 2 formats: i) Format IV: The student will be given a passage to read. At the end of it there will be a number of questions. The format and answers expected are same as Format I. ii) Format V: The student will be given a passage to read. At the end of it there will be a number of questions. The format and answers expected are same as Format II. c. Writing Module: 2 formats: i) Format VI: The student will be presented with a graphic. The student is then expected to write an essay of a specified number of words. A text area would be provided for the student to type in his essay. An automatic word counter display would be provided. ii) Format VII: The student is given a descriptive topic. The student is then expected then expected to write an essay of a specified number of words in the same manner as Format VI. d. Speaking Module: 2 formats: i) Format VIII: An audio question is played out. The student is expected to click a Speak button and speak out his answer. The expected length of the answer will be given in the instruction. When the student has completed his speaking, he has to click a Submit button to send in his audio recording. ii) Format IX: An audio question is played out and the student is presented with a topic description. The student is expected to click a Speak button and speak out his answer. When the student has completed his speaking, he has to click a Submit button to send in his audio recording. 6 A schematic of the overall IETS is shown in Figure 1. 7 To propose the effort required for a programmer to work with our domain expert/software architect to develop the IETS.
