Linux Web Server Possibly Sending SPAM - Need Help Investigating

Have a potentially compromised web server that looks like it may be sending out spam. The /var/log/maillog has some sendmail rejections to a bunch of emails that I don't recognize. Also the ISP let me know the server is exceeding the allowed sending limit. During normal operations the server should only be sending out 5 or some emails average per day. Need some help finding out what script(s) are sending the emails. Also if the server is compromised, need help finding how they got in and also closing the door(s). Thanks,
